Local Area Tidbits

We hate to say goodbye to such an inspiration, but Ramona “Moni” Gilmore, resident of El Dorado Hills, will be greatly missed as she passed away in her home on April 16. Considered a champion and advocate for senior citizens as well as local Fire and Emergency Services, Moni displayed a type of ethic that put community service above self. With her energetic personality, friendliness and love of wide-brim hats, she was a respectable member of this community and an exemplary human being. Her legacy will live on through her contributions to El Dorado Hills and the greater El Dorado County…

To make your own contribution to El Dorado County, keep The Upper Room of Placerville in mind, because after eight years of providing meals to those in need - the organization is having its first fundraiser! Your family or group can “adopt” a day of nourishment by giving a tax-deductible donation to cover the meals for the day of your choice. To learn more about how to get involved, contact Cheryl Kaufman at 530-621-7730, or send an email to [email protected]

School’s Out for Summer so congratulations are due to the graduates from Union Mine, El Dorado, Ponderosa and Oak Ridge High Schools. Congratulations graduates and good luck in your future endeavors…

Now, it’s time to get active and get outside! The City of Placerville Parks and Recreation Department has its Summer 2008 Activity Guide out and available for the masses. If you find yourself at a loss for things to do this summer, then look no further, because this beauty is a treasure trove of ideas. Whether it’s for you or your kids, the guide features enough activities to keep you and your children outside, engaged, and off the couch for the summer! Check it out at ci.placerville.ca.us/depts/parks. For more information, call the Recreation and Parks Department at 530-642-5232. And for those of you closer to the Cameron Park area – check out Cameron Park’s Community Service District interesting goings-on at its Web site, cameronpark.org/recreation.html

It’s time for a birthday announcement! Placerville’s own Winterhill Farms will be celebrating its first birthday at 321 Main Street in historic downtown Placerville. Instead of a one-day celebration, Winterhill’s will be happening for two days! On Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The party is open-house-style, so drop by and enjoy the great food, wine, birthday cake, and take home your own birthday gift (everyone gets a goodie bag). It’s a birthday party not to be missed!...

Now, for some more gift-giving…Lakemont Homes, the builder of the newest Eskaton Villages (multi-service retirement communities) located in Roseville and Placerville, donated a high-grade carpet to the Sierra II Senior Center on 24th Street in Curtis Park. Though this isn’t strictly local news, it’s always good to see a company that has worked locally to engage in philanthropic endeavors. The old carpet was roughly 10 years old, and had seen better days. A new carpet was what the center needed, and Lakemont delivered. Lakemont, we tip our hats to you!...

Enjoy the start of summer folks, and stay cool! •
