Ask the Expert: What’s the proper etiquette when wearing a corsage and boutonniere?

Q: What’s the proper etiquette when wearing a corsage and boutonniere?

A: Traditionally, a corsage is worn on the left wrist, but these days it’s not uncommon to see it worn on the right wrist. The corsage wearer should feel comfortable and proud to display it in pictures and at their formal event, so it’s a personal preference. A boutonniere is placed on the right side—over the heart, on a suit jacket or collared shirt. Typically, they’re pinned in place, but I love using floral magnets that attach to the boutonniere, which makes placing and wearing them easy, especially for teenagers. If using a pin, I recommend using two, as the weight of the boutonniere can vary as well as the thickness of the suit jacket. Also trending are pocket protector boutonnieres that can be slipped into a suit or tuxedo jacket pocket; they're practical and perfect for weddings and other special celebrations.
