Congrats to This Month’s Nonprofit of the Month: Sweet Dreams Foundation

Sweet Dreams Foundation started 18 years ago by a young lady, Jennifer Richards, when she was just 21 years old. Her goal was to uplift the spirits of children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by granting them a dream bedroom makeover: the space where they spend most of their time. Over the years, the nonprofit’s programs have expanded to include giving small gifts to the recipient’s siblings, providing wellness resources to families, and supplying baby wraps to NICU patients and other medically fragile infants.

Volunteer Spotlight: Alena Salenik

What made you want to become a volunteer for Sweet Dreams Foundation?
I started volunteering because I wanted to use my talent for a good cause, invest in the community, and meet new people. I also wanted to boost my self-confidence. When I serve the Sweet Dreams families it gives me a sense of purpose and makes me feel fulfilled.

What do your volunteer duties entail?
I’m a board member and also create the murals and art pieces for each room. My other duties include putting together furniture, cleaning, decorating the room, etc.

Is there training required?
No. All the volunteers have talents and skills that they use to accomplish the bedroom makeovers; even those who don’t have any end up learning some from the other team members.

What’s the time commitment?
The time commitment can be any amount you want and are able to give; you can serve once, or you can help with every bedroom.

What has been the best day of volunteering so far?
Every bedroom makeover is the best day for me; I really enjoy it!

What’s one of the biggest challenges?
Seeing families going through such difficult times without my own emotions pouring out.
