What's Up In May: The Newest Awards, Events, and Announcements from El Dorado County to Roseville

Located on the bottom floor of one of Downtown Roseville’s newest buildings at 316 Vernon Street, Goose Port Public House features local craft beers, and food in a family-friendly setting with a plethora of patio seating and TVs.

The El Dorado Hills Town Center is welcoming three new food-based businesses. In addition to fast food Chinese chain, Panda Express, locally owned Nibblers Popcorn Company—which will sell 64 flavors that run the gamut from savory (mac n’ cheese, dill pickle, garlic butter) to sweet (cotton candy, sea salt caramel), plus specialty, original, and kettle—and Sacramento-based Chando’s Cantina are also joining the center. 

Enjoy fresh-baked mini donuts, espresso drinks, and more filling fare like BBQ ribs (Tuesday and Thursday), sandwiches, soups, and burgers at Bounty Hunters Café at 406 Vernon Street in Downtown Roseville. The family-owned and operated eatery is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Locally owned Indian restaurant Curry Bowl, whose first location is sited in Rocklin, has expanded to 1870 Prairie City Road, Suite 500, in Folsom. In addition to its standard menu, they offer a daily lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A new sweet spot is slated to open this month at 300 Reading Street in Historic Folsom. Sutter Station Sweets & Café will serve breakfast, lunch, dessert, coffee, and tea with beer and wine coming soon.

Folsom Lake College Student Art Show— Johnny Cash by Dakota Daniels


Open your home to the world by hosting an exchange student from Spain, France, Italy, or China this summer. Volunteer families, couples, or single households in Roseville and the surrounding communities are needed beginning July 5 for either 2.5 weeks or 3.5 weeks. Being a host family with Educational Homestay Programs is a unique, rewarding, fun, and educational experience and an opportunity to create long-lasting relationships. Guitar players of all ages and levels are invited to bring their instrument to The Strum Shop in Roseville and play along with others every second Thursday of the month (May 9) at 7 p.m. Acoustic Guitar Club is a free event led by Eric Enberg who introduces several new songs each month and exposes participants to various skills related to the material.

The annual Folsom Lake College Student Art Show is on display at the Bank of America Gallery (inside the Harris Center) through May 19, with an artists’ reception on May 10 from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit features various artworks created by FLC students in a diverse range of media—from drawing, painting, and printmaking, to sculpture, mixed media, and metal arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. as well as one hour before and during intermission of performances at the Harris Center. Admission is free.

Granite City Coworking—sited at 705 Gold Lake Drive, Suite 250, in Folsom—provides the ideal environment for those seeking a flexible work space with all the perks of a typical office (Wi-Fi, coffee courtesy of Kingdom Coffee Roasters, etc.) where local entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses can draw on others’ experience and be part of a collaborative community. Home Inspirations, a branch of New Beginnings Gold Country, is a home store that sells restored furniture and chalk-painted décor. Their brick and mortar recently opened at 416 Main Street in Placerville and all profits support community outreaches. 

Terra Cottage


Terra Cottage, a “community approach to shopping small,” features a vast selection of handmade home décor, gifts, accessories, apparel, furniture, and plants from 20 local vendors, and is officially open at 426 Vernon Street in Downtown Roseville. Laser Away, which offers services like laser hair removal, Botox, laser tattoo removal, and CoolSculpting, is opening soon at Palladio at Broadstone between Serenity Spa | Soul Yoga and Forever 21

A new, high-end tattoo shop has made its home at 718 Sutter Street, Suite 208, in Folsom. Ms. Ting’s Shanghai Tattoo, owned by husband-wife duo Joshua Thompson and Zhuo Dan Ting, is the second location for the couple, whose first shop is in Shanghai, China. Sierra Wildlife Rescue is holding a Corvid Rehabbing Class on May 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the SWR Wildlife Center in Diamond Springs (777 Pleasant Valley Road). Corvids are a special group of the songbird family that include crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, nutcrackers, and others; rehabbing them is a fun, fulfilling experience. ‘Tis the season for Yoga in the Park! On May 16, ages 10+ are invited to practice at the American River Nature Center in Coloma from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The all-levels class is inspired by nature and designed to heal and restore. El Dorado Union High School District (EDUHSD) had six administrators honored at this year’s regional Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Administrator of the Year Awards Ceremony. Congrats to Aaron Palm (principal at Oak Ridge High School), Chuck Palmer (senior director of student services and innovation), Jeremy Hunt (assistant principal at Ponderosa High School), Marti Zizek (director of fiscal services), Anthony DeVille (assistant superintendent of human resources), and Lisa Garrett (principal at Ponderosa High School) who were all presented with awards. 

Longtime Sacramento TV anchor and radio host Paul Robins has started broadcasting his show from iHeartMedia’s first-ever on-campus radio studio at William Jessup University in Rocklin from 3-7 p.m. weekdays on 92.5 The Breeze. The state-of-the-art studio also benefits Jessup students enrolled in the digital communication and design program, who have access to the studio.

Roseville, Granite Bay, Rocklin, El Dorado Hills, and Folsom all made Niche.com’s “Best Sacramento Suburbs for 2019” list. The website graded locations based on quality of schools, crime rates, housing trends, and more. 

Congrats to former Rocklin High School swimmer Alec Heuermann who won two silver medals in the 200-meter freestyle and 4x100 meter freestyle events at the Special Olympic World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi. The 20-year-old was one of only three Special Olympians from California to receive an invitation to compete.
