Foodie Find: Sugar + Cream in Roseville

Sugar + Cream  //  Standing at the counter of Sugar + Cream in the Roseville Galleria, I had two questions, “What is ponchik, and what does taro taste like?” and walked away with just one, “How did I live this long without either of them in my life?” The quaint kiosk separates itself from conventional competitors with its exotic selection of ice cream flavors, sizeable quantities and low prices. As the worker generously and patiently enlightened my curiosity about ponchik (an Armenian doughnut, essentially) and handed me a sample of the purple taro, I decided I may as well try the two together. The next thing I knew, I was at the Galleria two days later in pursuit of the savory ponchik-taro sandwich sensation once again. To my slight disappointment, ponchik is only available Friday through Sunday, but don’t let its exclusivity deter you from visiting Sugar + Cream on weekdays. The shop serves locally roasted coffee, plus milkshakes, house-made waffle cones and waffle bowls, and regular scoops seven days a week; and the taro ice cream’s elusive flavor alone was enough to make me forget about the doughnut. If you’re bored with vanilla and sugar cones and looking to expand your ice cream palette, swing by Sugar + Cream for something that’s (literally) cool. Sugar + Cream, 1151 Galleria Boulevard, Space 9203, Roseville, 916-771-0263.
