Sitting by the window at Rita’s of Folsom, digging into a deep red Gelati of layered Wild Black Cherry Italian Ice and frozen Vanilla Custard, I couldn’t help but notice all the people who drifted in and out of the chirpy, Christmas-colored (lots of red and green) store. Four girls strolled in, discussed flavors in hushed tones, took their pick and headed out with giddy anticipation; a family of five with three kids trooped in with their favorite flavors at the tip of their tongues—a quick purchase later, they were all happily scooping and slurping away. Me? I was pretty happy too. I’d tried a few samples of the vividly colored flavors of sorbet-like Italian ice, and settled on the wild black cherry after thoughtful consideration. I liked the bits of cherry I found in each spoonful, fancied the rich color, and found the sweetness to be just right for my palate. And that custard? It was absolutely divine. Rich and creamy, it made me all kinds of happy. Needless to say, I went home with that cup of gelati feeling content and carefree—just like everyone else who left Rita’s that day.
