Folsom to Switch Animal Shelters as of July 1

Lenny was recently taken in by the city of Folsom Animal Services Department.
Beginning July 1, the Sacramento SPCA will serve as the new animal shelter for the City of Folsom.
The SPCA shelter, located at 6201 Florin Perkins Road, will handle the boarding and caring for any stray dogs, cats or other pets found in Folsom. Folsom residents will also have access to the SPCA’s shelter programs, including pet adoptions and a low-cost spay-neuter clinic.
Previously, the City of Folsom contracted with Blue Ravine Animal Hospital for sheltering services. The Blue Ravine Animal Hospital will continue to operate as a full service veterinary hospital, but will no longer provide public sheltering services.
“The SPCA has the capacity and a state-of-the-art facility to serve the Folsom community, while providing the highest quality of service to pets and people,” said Deputy City Manager Elaine Andersen.
Approximately 600 Folsom pets are reported missing annually. If a pet is lost or found in Folsom, residents should contact City of Folsom Animal Services and provide a description of the pet, the area in which it was last seen or located, contact information, and if possible, a digital photo. Animal Services officials underscore the importance of pet identification tags, licensing and microchipping in reuniting pets with owners.
“Remember, a pet with some form of identification usually finds its way home,” said Animal Services Officer Cindy Walden. “Pets with current licenses and ID do get home sooner and most often directly from the finder, eliminating the stress and cost of a trip to the shelter. All veterinary offices will scan a found pet for a microchip for free.”
The City also offers a low cost monthly rabies clinic for residents, providing an easy and affordable way to rabies-vaccinate, microchip and license pets. The clinics are held on the fourth Wednesday of every month, excluding November and December, at the Folsom City Lions Park from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. For a limited time, the City is offering a free microchip with the purchase or renewal of a City pet license at the monthly clinics. The City requires that all dogs and cats over four months of age be vaccinated against rabies and licensed.
