The sun is shining and skies are blue—it’s the perfect time to get outside and explore! From sports and street fairs to spring blooms and historic excursions, there’s fun to be had in your own backyard. Here, we reveal Style’s top picks for fresh air fun.

1 / EAT FARM TO FORK

Support local growers and artisans year-round at your neighborhood farmers’ market. Keep an eye out for apricots, strawberries and asparagus, all of which are currently in season.
  • Whole Foods Market at the Fountains
    1001 Galleria Boulevard, Roseville
    Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Foothill Farmers’ Market Auburn
Auburn Folsom Road at Lincoln Way (in the Old Town Courthouse Parking Lot)

2 / CATCH A FLICK

Enjoy a family-friendly “Friday Flick” under the stars at the Vernon Street Town Square. On April 17, round up your blankets and chairs for a free screening of Divergent (PG-13) starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James; weather permitting, the show will start promptly at 7:30 p.m., and light refreshments will be available for purchase (cash only). Can’t make it this month? Catch the Lego Movie (PG) on May 15!

3 / STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS

Spring has sprung at some of Loomis’ most breathtaking gardens. High Hand Nursery is home to quality shrubs, perennials and trees (including the spectacular Japanese maple), while its on-site Flower & Gift Market offers custom arrangements and handmade garden décor, and the Conservatory & Café—nestled smack dab in their beautiful nursery—serves up farm-fresh fare. At the nearby Flower Farm, a beautiful bed and breakfast, café, barn and Casque Wines’ tasting room are nestled among lush lawns and gardens, making it an ideal venue for a springtime wedding. In addition to offering guided farm and garden tours to local students, a variety of interactive gardening activities are available to children ages 2-10 and cost as little as $2.

4 / HIT THE ROAD

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Since 1955, the Placer County Fairgrounds have been home to the All American Speedway, known for its bomber races. Through the years, the former NASCAR-sponsored track has grown to include modified and late-stock events, WSRA Mini Cups, WSRA Baby Grands, and the Legends of the Pacific, bringing some of Northern California’s best racers to Roseville. Opening night is April 11, and with an uncertain future, this might be the last season to enjoy the ride.

 5 / WINE DOWN

Relax following a long day of work or play at Wine Down Wednesday, a weekly partnership between the Roseville Chamber of Commerce and local vintners. The celebration begins April 22 and continues through May 27 in the Vernon Street Town Square. Entry is just $5, and the fun begins at 5:30 p.m. with fine food, live music and, of course, fabulous local wines poured by some of the area’s top producers.

6 / DINE WITH YOUR DOG

Indulge in a meal out, minus the guilt of leaving Fido at home. A surprising number of local eateries are pet-friendly, including Mas Mexican in Roseville. Its sun-drenched patio is the perfect place to enjoy a round of handcrafted margaritas with a side of chips and guacamole. At Bootlegger’s Old Town Tavern and Grill in Auburn, hearty sandwiches, fresh salads and sumptuous steaks are served at cozy sidewalk tables where well-behaved dogs are always welcome.

7 / GET FIT

Kaia F.I.T.’s “I Kan RUN” is a fully customized program that’s designed to help both experienced and first-time female runners achieve their fitness goals—all in the great outdoors! Kaia F.I.T.’s highly dedicated and experienced trainers will help you improve speed and endurance, decrease injury, and get you one step closer to your personal finish line in approximately seven weeks.  8 / HIT THE LINKS

Roseville’s Timber Creek Golf Course has been named “Number One Golf Course” by the KCRA 3 A-List three times—an unsurprising accolade given its lush design and affordable rates. In 1998, the once 18-hole course was re-designed to include the nine-hole Sierra Pines featuring stunning lakes, waterfalls and an Audubon International Certified cooperative bird sanctuary. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or teeing off for the first time, there’s more than enough room to improve your long and short game, and advance rates come up to 35-percent off. Plus, Timber Creek’s on-property restaurant and ballroom make it the ideal setting for a naturally beautiful wedding.

9 / CELEBRATE MOTHER NATURE

The eighth annual Celebrate the Earth Festival will take place Saturday, April 18, at Roseville’s Mahany Regional Park. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., live music, local food trucks, and green vendors and organizations will all be available to families at this environmentally friendly event. In honor of Earth Day, Roseville Transit will offer free bus rides to the festival, while complimentary bike parking will be available for those who arrive on two wheels. The event runs on the support of volunteers, so community members and Earth lovers alike are encouraged to donate their time to making this year’s festival a success.

10 / STRIKE IT RICH

There’s gold in them hills! Pick up a pan at Auburn’s Pioneer Mining Supply and try your hand at prospecting. The South Yuba River, Merced River and South Fork of the American River are all ideal destinations for a bit of modern-day treasure hunting. For an in-depth look at the Mother Lode’s rich gold mining legacy, a visit to Grass Valley’s Empire Mine Historic State Park is a must. Here, guests can enjoy 850 magnificent acres steeped in history. Tours of the grounds’ cottages, mineyard and gardens are led by experienced docents and provide an educational glimpse into a bygone era.
