Local police departments are reacting to the Tuesday night death of a San Jose police officer.

Officer Michael Johnson, a 14-year veteran of the SJPD, was shot and killed at about 6:50 p.m. as police responded to a San Jose apartment building for a call of an intoxicated man who planned to harm himself or others, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

The suspect,
Scott Dunham, 57, later died after police stormed the apartment at about 1:30 a.m.

"
The Rocklin Police Department is saddened by the loss of another California law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty," the department said in a statement. "Members of the Rocklin Police Department will wear black mourning bands on our badges in a show of mourning and respect for the loss of San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson."

Flags flown at the Rocklin Police Station also will be at half-staff until after Johnson's funeral, the statement said.

The Roseville Police Department took to
its Facebook page to send a message to colleagues in San Jose.

"
Sending our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Michael Johnson, and to the men and women of the San Jose Police Department," the department posted.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office also posted a photo on
its Facebook page of a sheriff's badge with the traditional black band across the front as a sign of mourning and solidarity.

According to the Mercury News, Johnson is the first SJPD officer in 14 years to die in the line of duty. The last officer, Jeffrey Fontana, was in the same recruit class as Johnson, the News reported.
