Canyon Keepers Plan Mountain Quarries Railroad Hike

Mar 09, 2015 01:34PM ● By Brenna Mc Gowan

The Canyon Keepers will hike the old Mountain Quarries Railroad bed on Saturday, March 14, at 9 a.m.

The group will meet at the east end of the American River Canyon Overlook Park, 855 Pacific Ave., in Auburn.

The hike is five to six miles one way and will finish at the Mountain Quarries Railroad bridge at the Hwy 49 river confluence. Hikers will need to arrange transportation at each end of the hike.

Along the way, hikers will travel down some of the old rail bed, portions of the Western States Trail, see views of the American River and the Canyon Creek waterfall.

The hike is open to the public. Participants should prepare for the possibility of wet trails and creek crossings. The trail is mostly moderate with a couple of descends and one fairly steep climb. Sturdy shoes and walking sticks are recommended in addition to plenty of water.

Well behaved dogs on leashes that are used to single track trails are welcome.
