World War II Vet Injured in Diamond Springs Attack Passes

The World War II veteran who, along with his wife, was brutally attacked in his Diamond Springs home earlier this year has died.
According to an ABC News 10 report, Gerald Holderman Sr., 91, died after complications from injuries suffered in the Jan. 1 break-in. During the nine-hour ordeal, Holderman was reportedly shot, while is wife, Faye, was beaten in the head, reports state.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office reported in January that the couple had successfully made it through surgeries for their injuries. The couple's son, Jerry, said at the time he wasn't surprised at his father's survival.
"His dad is a former US Marine who fought in WWII," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "He said his father flew off the USS Vella Gulf in combat as a gunner’s mate in the rear of a Douglas SBD Dive Bomber. At the end of the war in 1945, he was in the first wave providing air cover for General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo Bay to accept Japan’s surrender."
Days before the attack the couple had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were longtime members of the Cold Springs Baptist Church in Placerville.
Services for Gerald Holderman Sr. have not been announced.
