An online petition to ban smoking in outdoor dining areas and multi-family dwellings in the City of Folsom is gaining some local support.

The petition, which is hosted on change.org, has a total of 41 signatures with a goal set at 59. The petition was started about two weeks ago by the Sacramento County Tobacco Control Coalition, a standing committee of the Sacramento County Public Health Advisory Board.

“Extending protections of no smoking ordinance to outdoor dining areas and at multifamily housing (apartment, duplexes, etc.)  is needed in the City of Folsom to eliminate the last few places where people are still being exposed--outdoor dining areas and in shared housing,” the petition reads. “This will protect  employees and patrons of restaurants and bars; and children, senior citizens and people living with low income in duplexes and apartments where smoke drifts from unit to unit.”

The petition notes there are over 100 cities or counties in California that have banned smoking from outdoor dining areas. Another 73 have banned it from multi-family housing. 

“It's time for the City of Folsom to be included in the list of cities and counties that have comprehensive tobacco control laws to protect citizens where they live, work, learn and play,” the petition says.
