Now through April, Roseville residents are encouraged to grow Roseville’s Community Art Garden using commonly discarded items — cardboard tubes from paper towel and toilet paper rolls. Complete with scissors, glue, and markers, these rolls can be transformed into hand-crafted colorful flowers in time for the spring!

The flowers will be displayed throughout Roseville before coming together as a Community Art Garden at the Celebrate the Earth Festival on April 18.

“By saving the tubes and creating flowers, residents can be part of a project to help beautify their community,” said Rachel Tooker, Director of the Roseville Utility Exploration Center. “We want people to have fun and get creative while also understanding the need to take simple actions to reduce impacts to the environment.”

According to the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Americans discard 17 billion toilet paper tubes each year — enough to fill the Empire State Building twice. And, many of those tubes end up in the nation’s landfills.   

Find instructions online at roseville.ca.us/artgarden or at the Roseville Utility Exploration Center and Blue Line Arts, then drop your flower at either location to add it to the garden. Participants are also encouraged to post an image of their flowers, along with tips on how to be green, on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the #arts4roseville hashtag.

All flowers will be brought together at the Celebrate the Earth Festival at Mahany Park on Saturday, April 18, to form the Community Art Garden. Flowers will then be made available for anyone to harvest into a beautiful bouquet.
