New Exhibit at Gallery at 48 Natoma January 23

Its not just a scrap of fabric. Artists that work in contemporary textiles frequently go so much farther than typical of other art forms. Where drawing and painting are often the finished product in other media, that is just where a fiber artist begins.
Using original designs the artists are frequently manipulating the material, dyeing, printing, painting, cutting, stitching, embroidering, embellishing, and then sewing pieces together into intricate patterns. Often only to cut it all apart again and re-stitch it several more times. When color, texture and design come together in this way, one can only admire the artistry involved.
In the next exhibit at the Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom, ARTful Women: Six Voices in Cloth, features the contemporary fiber art work by Pam Berry, Joan Dyer, Ann Sanderson, Lin Schiffner, Gail Sims, and Sandra Poteet. The exhibit opens January 23 and continues March 12, 2015.
The ARTful Women are artists whose primary medium is fabric. Their goal is to increase awareness about fabric as a legitimate fine art form and to push themselves to expand their creative limits using this dynamic medium. “It is our hope that viewers of our exhibitions will take a moment to grasp the great power found in such a common and familiar material as cloth.”
The pieces created by ARTful Women represent several emerging genres within the rapidly evolving world of stitched fabric as fine art. Each artist brings strengths to the group: fabric dyeing, painting, printing with precise detail, the creation of rich textural effects. They employ a wide spectrum of methods including complex value manipulation and a myriad of color techniques.
As a group they have been showing their work together for nearly four years. They came together with a common goal to search out opportunities and to share their work in venues that focus on visual arts across a wide spectrum of media and aim to engage an audience who may have had little experience with fabric/stitching as an art form. Each artist started with a background in both traditional and non-traditional quilt design and methods. They continue the hard work to educate themselves about their art in order to accomplish the group goals they set and to nourish their individual artistic growth. Together, they have had numerous exhibits regionally throughout Northern California.
In the adjacent Community Gallery at 48 Natoma, a creative display of children’s art from the Brighton Elementary Private School will feature work from students in the second through fifth grades. The children will display interpretations of various cloth and appliqué motifs done as works on paper.
The public is invited to celebrate both exhibits at the free opening reception on Friday, January 23, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m., with refreshments, wine and live guitar music by Daniel Roest and flute by Francesca Anderson.
The gallery is free and open to the public and art is available for purchase. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9-5, with additional hours Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. Free tours can be arranged by appointment.
