Janis Herbert is a local freelance writer and author of six books for young people: Abraham Lincoln for Kids, The Civil War for Kids, Leonardo da Vinci for Kids, Lewis and Clark for Kids, and Marco Polo for Kids.

She also co-wrote The World Don’t Owe Me Nothing: The Life and Times of Delta Bluesman David Honey-boy Edwards.
Her enthusiasm for history and for educating kids comes through clearly in her books. “Young readers of my Lewis and Clark book will learn about ecology and the ways of native peoples while crossing North America with the brave members of the Corps of Discovery.”

Herbert obviously loves her work, and her artistic spirit is what inspired her book on Leonardo. “Exploring the era of the Renaissance through the life of that fascinating genius...helped me, and hopefully my readers, realize the importance of creativity and art.”

Additional inspiration comes to Herbert, it seems, through the great outdoors. It is evident that she loves her Folsom home, and when she is not working on her next masterpiece, she enjoys spending time outside in Northern California.
